Over 10,000 People Treated at Local Injury Unit in Mallow General Hospital during 2024 – O’Shea

Cork North West Fine Gael TD Deputy John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the latest figures from the HSE showing strong and growing demand for the Local Injury Unit at Mallow General Hospital.

The HSE has confirmed that attendances at the Local Injury Unit remain strong, with 10,883 people treated there in 2024. This was an increase to the 9,882 people treated there in 2023 and 9,699 in 2022. Almost 8,800 have already been seen in the Local Injury Unit thus far in 2025.

Deputy O’Shea said “These figures clearly show that the Mallow Local Injury Unit continues to provide an essential and trusted service for people across North Cork and beyond. The steady increase in attendance demonstrates the confidence the public has in the high-quality care provided by the dedicated staff at Mallow General Hospital. As we approach the end of 2025, it’s likely that the total number of people treated this year will once again exceed 10,000 — a testament to the vital role the Injury Unit plays in relieving pressure on nearby emergency departments”.

Mallow based Cllr. Tony O’Shea added his support, highlighting the importance of continued investment in the facility. “The Mallow Local Injury Unit is a lifeline for our community. Continued investment and public awareness are essential to ensure that people know they can receive fast, expert treatment locally without the need to travel long distances to alternative Emergency Departments in Cork City, Limerick and indeed Kerry.”

Deputy O’Shea concluded by thanking the dedicated staff working at the unit saying, “Their professionalism and commitment ensure that patients receive timely and expert care close to home — something that deserves recognition and ongoing support from the HSE and Government.”
