O’Shea Welcomes Additional €2 Million for Meals on Wheels
Feb 23, 2026
Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has warmly welcomed the announcement of an additional €2 million in funding for the national Meals on Wheels service for 2026, describing it as a significant investment in supporting older people and vulnerable residents across Cork North West.
The increased allocation, announced by the Tánaiste Simon Harris and Minister of State for Older People Kieran O’Donnell, brings the total dedicated funding for Meals on Wheels nationally to €8.25 million in 2026 — an increase of over 30% on last year’s allocation. This funding will support the delivery of over 3.3 million meals nationwide, as committed to in the HSE National Service Plan for 2026.
Welcoming the news, Deputy O’Shea said “This additional funding is hugely positive for the many people across Cork North West who rely on Meals on Wheels to remain living independently in their own homes. In rural communities like ours, this service is not just about providing a hot meal — it is about providing connection, reassurance and dignity.
“For many older people and vulnerable residents, the daily visit from a Meals on Wheels volunteer is a vital social interaction and an important safeguard against loneliness and isolation. The additional €2 million secured in Budget 2026 will help strengthen and expand these essential services locally.”
There are currently 319 Meals on Wheels organisations operating nationwide, delivering meals to over 18,000 people each month. Funding for the service has increased substantially in recent years, rising from just over €3 million in 2022 to €8.25 million in 2026 — reflecting the Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting older people to live independently for longer.
Deputy O’Shea also paid tribute to the volunteers and community groups who operate Meals on Wheels services across towns and villages throughout Cork North West.
“I want to sincerely thank the volunteers and community organisations in areas such as Kanturk, Bandon, Dunmanway, Millstreet, Newmarket, Charleville and surrounding communities who give their time so generously. Their dedication ensures that people can continue to live safely and comfortably at home.
“This funding will provide additional stability and certainty to local providers and allow them to meet growing demand, particularly in our rural areas.”
Deputy O’Shea encouraged anyone who believes they, a family member or a neighbour may benefit from the service to contact their local Meals on Wheels provider.
“Meals on Wheels provides peace of mind to families and an invaluable service to those who depend on it. I would strongly encourage people to make contact locally if they think this service could help.”
