Gooldshill Housing Estate in Mallow has reached new heights this week after securing top prize in the Community Housing Awards 2013.
Cork County Council and Túath Housing Association were awarded a Community Housing Award in the ‘Housing for Families’ Category at the recent awards ceremony in Wexford. The award recognised the “excellence in design, management, community development and sustainability” in the new Gooldshill Estate in Mallow.
Congratulating all involved, local Cllr. John Paul O’ Shea (Ind) said “I am delighted Gooldshill Housing Estate has been so successful in this year’s Community Housing Awards. The Housing Directorate of Cork County Council and Túath Housing Association has worked tremendously together since this new housing estate was built and began to occupy families into their new homes. This award could not have happened without the efforts of Sheila Thorton, Chairperson of Gooldshill Community Council who has put in so much work in making this estate such a proud place to live. This award will no doubt strengthen the community spirit within the Estate even further in the coming months and years ahead”.
Gooldshill Estate in Mallow is a development of 215 famly units along with a community facility & play areas. The estate was designed for Cork County Council by Reddy O’ Riordan Staehli Architects and incorporated a high quality of sustainable design in terms of heat loss. Túath Housing Association under the social leasing scheme of Cork County Council manages 88 units while the remainder of the units are managed by Cork County Council.
Cork County Council, Tuath Housing Association, Cloyne Dioceses Youth Services and Gooldshill Community Council have all worked together to develop a real sense of community which was acknowledged in the award. Cllr. O’ Shea added “Gooldshill Estate is very privileged to be working with so many organisations that have a keen interest in the development of the estate. There is a fantastic new community centre within the estate that is run by Cloyne Dioceses Youth Services who organise many community gatherings and beneficial youth programmes. Avondhu Blackwater Partnership also provides assistance to the estate with community development training and practical support to maintain the estate with Tús participants. I want to wish Gooldshill Estate continued success in their future endeavours to make their estate one they can be very proud of”.
