Councillor John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the announcement of a €10 million nationwide upgrade programme for Day Centres and Meals on Wheels services. This funding will support around 400 Health Service Executive (HSE) funded community organisations by providing extra financial support of up to €25,000 per organisation.
Cllr O’Shea expressed his support, saying: “This funding is a much-needed boost for our community services. It will significantly improve the facilities where older individuals receive care and social support, enhancing their quality of life.”
Day Centres and Meals on Wheels services offer a safe and welcoming environment where people can access essential services and engage in social activities. These services foster a sense of community and well-being, providing supports that help individuals remain in their homes longer.
“Living well at home involves more than just receiving care; it means having a place to go during the week to access essential services and connect with others,” Cllr O’Shea added. “These community services do incredible work, and I am thrilled to see them receiving this essential funding.”
The funding will help organisations upgrade their facilities and purchase necessary equipment. “This additional €10 million through the HSE will ensure every service has the financial support for essential improvements,” Cllr O’Shea noted.
Meals on Wheels continues to be a vital resource, delivering around 2.7 million meals last year. This service helps older individuals maintain their health and independence through the provision of healthy meals.
Cllr O’Shea emphasized the importance of investing in community care services. “We aim to keep people well at home, combating isolation and loneliness while providing peace of mind for family members,” he said. The government is investing approximately €730 million this year in home support services through the HSE.
“We prioritize helping older people live full lives at home. This funding will ensure Meals on Wheels and Day Centres can operate safely and effectively. I encourage centres to consider expanding their services with this new funding,” Cllr O’Shea concluded.
The HSE Regional Health Areas (RHAs) will administer the funding, which will be available to all HSE-funded day care and Meals on Wheels services. Further details on the grant funding and application process will be communicated directly to services in the coming weeks. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing community-based services and supporting the well-being of individuals across the country.
