O’Shea Welcomes Launch of My Little Library 2026 Initiative
May 11, 2026
Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the launch of the My Little Library 2026 initiative, which encourages children starting primary school to visit their local library, pick up a free book bag and become library members.
The nationwide initiative, announced by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley and Minister of State Jerry Buttimer, is aimed at supporting children and families as they prepare for the transition from pre-school to primary school.
Since 8th May last, all children completing the Government-funded Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programme and starting primary school this September are invited to collect a free My Little Library book bag from their local library. The bags will be available throughout the summer.
Welcoming the initiative, Deputy O’Shea said “The transition from pre-school to primary school is a hugely important milestone for children and families. Initiatives like My Little Library help children to develop a love of reading from an early age while also supporting parents during this exciting stage. Our local libraries provide an invaluable service to communities across the country, and this initiative is a wonderful way to introduce young children to the joy of books, stories and learning.”
The My Little Library bags contain a selection of books and resources to support children starting school, including information for parents on helping children with the transition to primary school. The bags are available in both English and Irish, with additional supports and resources included.
Deputy O’Shea also encouraged families to make use of their local library services. “I would encourage all families with children starting school this September to visit their local library, collect their free book bag and take advantage of the excellent services and welcoming spaces our libraries offer.”
The My Little Library initiative is funded by the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, delivered by local authorities and libraries, and supported by the Local Government Management Agency.
