O’Shea Welcomes Progress of New Classroom and Special Education Facilities at Inchigeelagh NS

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Education and Youth that significant capital works are progressing at Inchigeelagh National School to enhance both mainstream and special education provision.

Deputy O’Shea received confirmation from the Department of Education and Youth in response to a Parliamentary Question he submitted seeking clarity on the status, scope and timeframe of the project.

Works underway with new accomodation at Inchigeelagh NS

The school has been approved under the Additional School Accommodation (ASA) Scheme for a project that will deliver one new Mainstream Classroom, Two new Special Education Tuition (SET) Rooms along with ancillary accommodation to support these facilities.

Importantly, the project has now progressed to Stage 4 (Construction) with works currently advancing on site and the project remains on track for completion by the end of 2026.

Deputy O’Shea said “I am delighted to see real and tangible progress at Inchigeelagh National School. These new facilities will make a meaningful difference for students, staff and families in the community. The provision of two dedicated Special Education Tuition Rooms alongside a new mainstream classroom reflects the growing needs of the school and the importance of ensuring every child has access to the supports they require in an inclusive learning environment.”

Deputy O’Shea added “This investment demonstrates the Fine Gael’s ongoing commitment to supporting rural schools and strengthening special education provision across Cork North West. I will continue to engage with the Department to ensure the project progresses smoothly through to completion in 2026.”

Deputy O’Shea concluded by paying tribute to the school leadership and board of management for advancing the project under the devolved delivery model. “I commend the school authority for their work in bringing this project through the various stages of approval and now into construction. This is a very positive development for Inchigeelagh and the wider community.”
