O’Shea Welcomes Vital Water Network Investment for Codrum, Macroom

O’Shea Welcomes Vital Water Network Investment for Codrum, Macroom

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has warmly welcomed confirmation that Uisce Éireann is to commence works to replace ageing and damaged water mains in Codrum, Macroom, as part of its National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The works, which will take place along the L3415 between the Crescent housing estate and Macroom Tool Hire and Sales, are due to begin next week and are scheduled for completion in April. The project will see the replacement of older water mains that have been prone to frequent bursts and water loss, while also providing new service connections to customers’ property boundaries.

Deputy O’Shea said “This is a very welcome and much-needed investment for the Codrum area of Macroom. For too long, residents and local businesses have experienced the frustration and inconvenience caused by recurring water main bursts and supply disruptions.

“These works will significantly strengthen the resilience of the local water network, reduce the loss of treated drinking water, and provide households with the reliable supply they deserve. Water is a precious resource, and it is essential that we continue to modernise and future-proof our infrastructure.”

The works are being delivered by Ward and Burke Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann and form part of a wider national effort to reduce leakage and improve efficiency across more than 65,000km of water mains nationwide.

Deputy O’Shea added “I particularly welcome the focus on reducing leakage, which nationally has already fallen from 49% in 2014 to 36% today — the lowest level on record. This demonstrates real progress, but continued investment like this in communities such as Codrum is essential.

“I also appreciate the commitment to minimising disruption during the works. While some traffic management measures will be necessary to ensure safety, it is reassuring that local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.”

Deputy O’Shea encouraged any residents with queries to contact Uisce Éireann directly at 1800 278 278 or to check the Water Supply Updates section of their website for regular updates.

“This project is about delivering certainty and reliability for families and businesses in Macroom — not just for today, but for generations to come,” he concluded.
