O’Shea Welcomes Progression of Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade in Ballydesmond

Cork North-West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed confirmation that Uisce Éireann is proceeding with the long-awaited upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant in Ballydesmond, following the granting of planning permission in 2025.

Deputy O’Shea said the development represents very positive news for Ballydesmond and the surrounding area, providing essential infrastructure to support future growth and environmental protection.

“This is a significant step forward for Ballydesmond. I warmly welcome that Uisce Éireann is now progressing this important project following successful planning process last year. Modern reliable wastewater infrastructure is critical to sustaining and growing rural communities,” he said.

The approved project will involve a comprehensive upgrade and redevelopment of the existing wastewater treatment plant. Works will include the construction of a new forward feed pumping station, new inlet works, and new combined aeration and stormwater tanks, along with a final settlement tank and associated access infrastructure.

The development will also see the installation of modern treatment systems, including ferric dosing, sodium hydroxide dosing, tertiary disc filters, and a polymer dosing system. Additional elements include a new supernatant pump station, potable water booster pump station, control kiosk and welfare unit, and a sludge holding tank.

As part of the project, the existing wastewater treatment plant will be decommissioned and demolished, with all associated site development works to be carried out, including hard and soft landscaping.

Deputy O’Shea noted that a Natura Impact Statement was prepared as part of the planning process, ensuring that the project has been carefully assessed in terms of its environmental impact.

“This upgrade will significantly enhance treatment capacity and performance in Ballydesmond, improving water quality and ensuring compliance with environmental standards. Just as importantly, it will help unlock opportunities for housing and local economic development into the future,” he added.

The project forms part of Uisce Éireann’s continued investment in wastewater infrastructure across rural Ireland, supporting balanced regional development and safeguarding the environment.

“Once delivered, this project will make a real difference to the quality of life for residents in Ballydesmond. I commend Uisce Éireann and all involved for bringing this project to this stage and look forward to seeing works progress,” Deputy O’Shea concluded.
